Prelude Dark Pain Equipment Guide

Weapons, clothes, accessories, and upgrade priorities for Act 1.

Last updated:

Equipment in Prelude Dark Pain sits between your hero’s talent tree and the tactical grid itself. A well-timed taunt from Tammais matters more than any single sword stat, but under-geared squads bleed battle points — sometimes literally when Soren’s bleed combos fail to close kills before reinforcements arrive. This guide explains how gear works in Early Access, what to craft first at your settlement, and how to align items with the builds you are running through Act 1.

Gear categories in Early Access

Quickfire’s Act 1 crafting loop focuses on practical pieces rather than exotic set bonuses:

  • Weapons — primary damage or utility source for melee and ranged heroes. Soren’s blacksmith background flavor-wise, but every hero equips their own weapon type.
  • Clothes — defensive and attribute padding. Tanks like Tammais want health and mitigation; hunters like Maya prefer accuracy and mobility-friendly stats.
  • Accessories — smaller stat bundles that round out a build, especially useful for support pivots on Tizon or zone-control setups on Sade.

Unlike the full 1.0 promise of deep faction gear, Early Access recipes are broadly shared. You choose which attributes to emphasize, not which legendary set to chase. That keeps the items hub honest about current scope while still rewarding map exploration.

The six attributes and what to craft

Every hero levels six overarching attributes that scatter benefits across skills, movement, and passives. Gear adds flat or percentage bonuses on top. While exact numbers shift with balance patches, the design intent is clear from preview coverage:

Attribute focusTypical heroCraft when…
MightSoren, Tammais, melee TizonYou rely on basic attacks and close-range skills
FinesseMaya, Gala, ranged TizonYou kite, flank, or deploy traps and barrels
WillSade, support TizonYou heal, deploy turrets, or lock zones with the golden cross
VitalityTammais, any frontlinePatrol difficulty spikes on the Statera overworld
Other shared statsAll heroesYou need initiative, crit consistency, or debuff duration

Because attributes overlap, two heroes might wear similar clothes but different weapons. Before mass-crafting, open the DPS and assassin builds page if you run Soren, Maya, or Gala together — duplicate Finesse pieces are fine, duplicate Might weapons are not.

Crafting, upgrading, and dismantling

Your settlement blacksmith handles three operations:

  1. Craft — spend crafting materials to create a new piece at your current recipe tier.
  2. Upgrade — improve an equipped item in place, preserving any battle history tied to that slot.
  3. Dismantle — destroy unwanted gear for partial material refunds.

Upgrade before dismantling whenever possible. Act 1 material income is steady but not generous; throwing away a mid-tier piece because you skipped one upgrade step is a common early mistake. If you send heroes on settlement raids, schedule upgrades during raid downtime so your tank frontline is never waiting on a crafter queue mid-mission.

Role-specific equipment priorities

Frontline (Tammais)

Tammais taunts enemies and grows stronger as he absorbs hits. Prioritize Vitality and mitigation on clothes, then a weapon that adds Might if you skill into counter-damage talents. Accessories that extend taunt duration or reduce incoming flanking damage pay off on moving battlefields — the caravan escape sequence is a preview of how often positioning shifts mid-fight.

Melee DPS / bleed (Soren)

Soren’s kit rewards bleed application followed by amplified strikes. Craft weapons that boost Might or on-hit consistency, and clothes that let him survive one extra turn in melee range. He is not a glass assassin; he is a retired warrior who expects to trade blows.

Ranged DPS (Maya, Gala)

Maya’s owl companion and blind effects want reliable accuracy and debuff uptime. Gala’s self-immune barrels mean she can afford lighter clothes if Finesse is high enough to reposition safely. See support and control if Sade holds zones while Maya clears marked targets.

Hybrid support (Tizon, Sade)

Tizon defaults to heals and turrets but can hard-pivot into damage with the right attributes and gear — previews show him becoming a top damage dealer when built aggressively. Sade’s golden cross rewards Will and area control stats. Craft accessories first for both before investing in expensive weapons you may respec away from.

When to replace gear during Act 1

Replace equipment when any of these become true:

  • A story mission recommends a higher tier recipe you can afford.
  • Your main damage dealer stops one-turning weakened enemies on the overworld.
  • Your tank loses more than half health to a single focused volley without defensive skills active.
  • You respec a hero into a new role after unlocking additional skill slots.

Do not chase perfect rolls. Early Access gear has no complex affix reroll system; incremental upgrades beat hoarding materials for a hypothetical perfect drop. Our Early Access review notes that crafting is a “cherry on top” today — treat it as mandatory maintenance, not optional min-maxing.

Synergy with skills and virtues

Equipment cannot replace missing skill synergies. A bleed Soren without bleed skills equipped gains little from a Might-heavy weapon. Likewise, Tammais without taunt talents online should not wear tank-only accessories at the expense of squad DPS. Always align gear with your locked-in skill bar:

  • Four active skills define your turn-by-turn plan.
  • Two passives modify how gear stats translate into combat outcomes.
  • Virtues from the talent tree multiply specific bonuses — craft into those multipliers.

Free talent respecs exist, but materials do not refund when you pivot. Pick a build from builds hub, craft for it, then respec only when the story demands a new tool.

Looking ahead to full release

The Steam Early Access FAQ promises fully implemented crafting across all acts at 1.0, with more factions, bosses, and World Mission rewards feeding higher tiers. Act 1 equipment will eventually feel like starter gear. For now, mastering the blacksmith loop separates smooth overworld pacing from unnecessary grind — and keeps the Blue Net rebellion supplied for the next Ashen Crusade patrol.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Are there formal armor sets in Early Access?

No set bonuses like full plate collections. Gear is piecemeal clothes, weapons, and accessories with straightforward stat lines. Depth comes from matching attributes to your [build](/builds/) rather than collecting named sets.

Should I upgrade or craft new gear first?

Upgrade equipped pieces until you hit the Act 1 tier cap for that recipe, then craft replacements when you unlock the next tier from story progress or [material farming](/items/crafting-materials/).

Which hero should receive the first crafted weapon?

Usually whoever kills the slowest in overworld fights — often Soren or Maya in bleed/hunter comps, or Tizon if you built him as DPS. Tanks benefit more from upgraded clothes first.

Does gear affect battle points or only stats?

Gear modifies attributes that indirectly affect damage, range, and survivability. Battle point costs per skill are fixed by the skill itself, not your weapon tier.
