Prelude Dark Pain Tier List

Hero rankings and squad picks for Early Access Act 1

Prelude Dark Pain Tier List Hub

Prelude Dark Pain launched into Steam Early Access with nine playable heroes, eight class types, and squad-based turn combat built around battle points, flanking, and terrain. There is no official developer tier list yet, but after Act 1 clears and repeated boss attempts, community rankings have settled around consistent patterns. This hub collects those Early Access opinions in one place so you can compare individual hero strength against full five-hero lineups before you commit skill points on the world map.

What the tier list covers

Early Access includes Soren, Tizon, Tammais, Maya, Sade, Gala, Rufio, Urza, and Rayder. Each hero ships with four active skills, two passive abilities, and virtues unlocked through two talent branches. Because you can respec at the Citadel between missions, tier placement reflects how easily a hero contributes in the first fifteen hours—not whether they are permanently locked into one build. A support-focused Tizon and a damage-focused Tizon can land in different tiers depending on your squad.

Our breakdown splits into two dedicated guides:

  • Hero rankings — S through C placements for all nine Act 1 heroes with build notes
  • Squad compositions — five-hero teams that cover tank, control, burst, and cleanup roles

Read both before you finalize your roster. Individual tier letters matter less than whether your fifth slot closes a gap the other four leave open.

How we rank heroes in Early Access

Rankings weigh four factors that show up in every Act 1 encounter: action economy, positioning utility, survivability, and setup cost.

Action economy matters because characters spend battle points on skills, movement, basic attacks, and defending. Heroes who deliver high impact for one or two points climb the list. Maya’s knockbacks and Tizon’s turret lines often pay for themselves by denying enemy turns or finishing wounded targets without extra investment.

Positioning utility covers flanking bonuses, height advantage, push and pull effects, and area denial. Prelude Dark Pain rewards attacking from the sides or rear, so controllers and tanks that hold choke points rank higher than glass cannons that need perfect setup every round.

Survivability includes taunt coverage, self-shields, defend synergies, and passive damage reduction. Tammais remains a staple because soaking hits while scaling off damage taken stabilizes uneven encounters on the Statera world map.

Setup cost penalizes heroes who need multiple turns before their kit online. Gala’s explosive barrels and Sade’s golden cross can swing fights, but they demand foresight and friendly positioning. We note those conditions in the detailed rankings rather than punishing creative players who plan around them.

Class types and synergy

Eight class archetypes—Ranged DPS, Magic Support, Assassin, and others—define baseline roles, but talent branches blur the lines. Tizon can heal and deploy turrets or pivot into your hardest hitter. Soren’s bleed route stays straightforward while other heroes offer wider branching. Tier list entries call out the builds we tested, not every theoretical path.

Synergy beats raw letter grades. A B-tier hero that completes your initiative plan can outperform an S-tier hero who duplicates another slot. That is why squad compositions sit beside individual rankings. Combine a front-line taunt, a controller, two damage dealers with different reach, and a flex support or assassin for most story missions.

When rankings will change

Quickfire Games plans roughly one year of Early Access before full release, expanding beyond Act 1 to twenty-plus heroes, twenty factions, and seventy enemy types. Balance patches, new recruits from world missions, and crafting upgrades will shift the meta. We update this hub after major patches and link to combat UI fundamentals whenever new mechanics affect turn order or battle point costs.

Until then, treat tiers as a starting framework. Experiment at the Citadel, lean on keyboard and mouse controls for faster targeting, and revisit rankings once you recruit heroes tied to story choices you may have missed on a first playthrough.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Is there an official Prelude Dark Pain tier list?

No. Quickfire Games has not published official hero tiers. Rankings on this wiki reflect Early Access community testing and Act 1 encounter experience, and they will change as balance patches arrive.

How many heroes can I field in battle?

You deploy up to five heroes per fight from the nine available in Early Access. Tier list entries assume full five-hero squads unless noted otherwise.

Can I change builds after ranking a hero low?

Yes. Respec at your settlement between missions. Talent branches and equipped skills shift a hero's tier band dramatically—especially Tizon, Gala, and Urza.

Will more heroes be added to the tier list?

Full release targets twenty-plus playable heroes. We will extend rankings as new recruits and world mission heroes join Early Access roadmaps.
