Prelude Dark Pain Combat UI and Battle Flow
Initiative, battle points, and HUD elements
Every Prelude Dark Pain fight runs on the same combat HUD: an initiative queue showing turn order, per-hero battle point pools, skill bars with point costs, tile overlays for movement and targeting, and status icons for bleed, taunt, blind, and elevation bonuses. Understanding these elements separates smooth Act 1 clears from accidental flanking deaths. Pair this guide with keyboard and mouse controls for the inputs that drive each panel.
Initiative queue
The initiative strip lists upcoming turns for heroes and enemies, usually along the top or side of the battle screen. Portraits tick forward as units finish actions. Hover a portrait to see delayed actions, status effects, and whether a unit is defending.
Team-based structure means your five heroes each take a full action phase before some enemy waves repeat, but individual enemy types insert themselves according to speed stats and boss rules. Assassins appearing twice before your back line moves is a common failure mode—intercept with taunt tanks from recommended squads once you read the queue.
Boss encounters add free actions: extra skill uses that do not consume normal initiative slots. These appear marked on the boss portrait or as a separate telegraph icon. Never assume a boss is finished spending aggression when its main turn ends; check the queue for bonus casts that can wipe unsupported ranged heroes.
Battle points
Each hero receives a fresh battle point allocation each turn—Early Access fights commonly start heroes with two points, though talents and statuses modify totals. Points pay for:
- Active skills (cost shown on icons)
- Movement to highlighted tiles
- One basic attack per turn in most cases
- Defend, which reduces damage taken and limits flanking vulnerability until the next turn
Because skills do not automatically end the turn, you can move, cast, attack, and defend in one phase if points allow. This enables combo lines like Maya knockback into Gala detonation or Soren bleed into flanked basic attacks. Plan spends before clicking—canceling late wastes time but should refund points if the action has not resolved.
When points run low, prioritize defend on units expecting enemy focus fire. Crusade elites from the factions guide bonus damage from rear arcs; defend closes that window temporarily.
Skill bar and targeting overlays
Selected heroes show four active skills plus basic attack and defend on the HUD. Greyed icons indicate insufficient points or cooldowns if present. Tooltips list damage type, range, height requirements, and friendly-fire risk—critical for barrels and cross zones.
Targeting mode paints movement in blue, attack range in red, and skill templates in yellow or orange depending on element. Height advantage icons appear on elevated tiles; flanking chevrons show when an angle qualifies for bonus damage. Shift-hover or alternate tooltip keys may reveal exact percentage bonuses depending on your build settings.
Unit frames and status effects
Hero health bars sit near portraits or above models on the grid. Buff and debuff rows use icons with timers counting turns until expiry. Bleed stacks from Soren synergies, taunt from Tammais, and blind from Maya all display here—track them before swapping targets.
Enemies expose similar frames when selected. Inspect armor type or faction tags when available to guess resistances before spending four-point skills.
Environmental and objective UI
Set-piece missions overlay objective text: protect NPCs, destroy bridge supports, survive waves, or reach extraction zones. Moving vehicle maps scroll the grid automatically; the HUD adds direction arrows showing drift. Environmental kills from knockback off carriages or cliffs show as instant defeat effects without extra point spend—position accordingly using initiative preview.
Destructible objects highlight when skills can interact. Friendly-fire warnings flash if an explosion hits allies—Gala players should confirm ally positions in the queue downtime between turns.
Turn flow checklist
- Read initiative for the next two enemy actions
- Select hero whose turn is active
- Move to flanking or elevated tiles if needed
- Spend points on skills that advance the objective
- Basic attack or defend with remaining budget
- End turn via HUD button or Enter
Repeat until victory conditions trigger or your squad wipes. After battle, loot and XP screens return you to the world map unless a chained encounter starts immediately.
Common UI mistakes
Ignoring boss free actions wastes revives. Overspending points without defend on Maya-like back liners invites one-shot flanks. Forgetting elevation tooltip checks leads to whiffed ranged shots. Clicking confirm on friendly-fire skills without reading warnings damages your taunt tank.
Fix these by slowing down during learning fights—not by disabling UI elements. Early Access does not ship with an extensive tutorial for every faction kit; the interface gives you the data if you pause to read it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
How many battle points do heroes get per turn?
Most Early Access encounters grant two battle points per hero per turn before talents modify totals. Skill tooltips show individual costs.
What are boss free actions?
Bosses can use additional skills outside normal initiative slots. The queue or boss portrait marks these telegraphed actions—plan defend and positioning before they resolve.
Does defend consume a battle point?
Yes. Defend spends points like skills but reduces damage and flanking vulnerability until your next turn.
Can I see enemy turn order in advance?
The initiative queue lists upcoming enemy and ally turns. Hover portraits for details when tooltips are enabled.
