Prelude Dark Pain Soren

Protagonist blacksmith and bleed-focused rogue who rewards flanking and status setups.

Who is Soren?

Soren is the protagonist of Prelude Dark Pain — a retired warrior living quietly as a blacksmith until the Order of the Ashen Crusade attacks his family and forces him back onto the battlefield. In combat he plays like a rogue-style melee DPS: he applies bleed debuffs, exploits flanking and height advantage, and hits harder against bleeding targets thanks to his passive kit.

You meet Soren in the opening act alongside his son Tizon. Their family story drives Act 1, but Soren remains a strong pick even when you rotate other heroes into your five-man squad.

Role and strengths

AspectDetail
Class feelMelee DPS / rogue
RangeShort — must position for side and back attacks
Key statusBleed
Best partnersMaya for blind, Tammais for aggro control
WeaknessFragile if caught in the open without tank cover

Previews describe Soren’s loop as straightforward but effective: apply bleed, then spend battle points on finishers that benefit from his passive boost against bleeding enemies. Directional attacks matter — hitting from the side or rear deals bonus damage, and elevated tiles amplify pressure further.

Active skills (four slots)

Each hero equips four actives from a larger pool unlocked through levels and talent branches. Soren’s kit centers on bleed application and high-impact melee strikes:

  1. Flanking strike — closes distance and applies bleed when Soren attacks from an advantageous angle. This is your opener when you can reach an enemy’s side or back.
  2. Hammer rush — a forward commit that deals weapon damage and can reposition Soren for follow-up flanks. Strong on wounded targets already bleeding.
  3. Forge cleave — a wide melee swing that spreads bleed to adjacent foes. Excellent when Tammais has grouped enemies with taunt.
  4. Revolutionary strike — a high-cost finisher that spikes damage against bleeding targets. Save battle points for this after your setup turn.

Swap actives at camp or on the world map when a mission demands burst over spread — for example, swap cleave for a single-target finisher on boss fights.

Passive abilities

Soren carries two passives that define his ceiling:

  • Blood on the anvil — increases damage dealt to enemies suffering from bleed. This is why status uptime matters more than raw weapon stats early on.
  • Old soldier’s footing — grants bonus movement or positioning resilience (exact scaling grows with attributes), helping Soren reach flank tiles before spending attacks.

Passives are always on; build your four actives around keeping bleed active every round.

Virtues and dual build branches

Like every Early Access hero, Soren has virtues plus two talent branches:

Blacksmith branch — emphasizes weapon crafting synergy, sustained bleed damage, and durability through equipment scaling. Best when you invest in settlement crafting and longer world-map campaigns.

Revolutionary branch — pushes burst damage, movement tricks, and multi-target bleed setups. Better for aggressive story pacing and quick encounter clears.

Virtues typically reward consistent flanking — for example, bonus battle points when you kill a bleeding target or when you attack from high ground. Read both branches before level 10; respec costs are manageable in Act 1 but planning avoids wasted points.

Squad synergies

Soren wants a front line that holds attention while he circles. Tammais taunt keeps faces turned away from Soren. Maya blind reduces enemy accuracy while Soren sets up bleed. Gala barrels punish clustered bleeding foes pushed into traps.

Tizon bear traps slow targets Soren can flank. Sade golden cross zones block escape routes. Avoid stacking too many melee heroes without Urza support — Soren needs space to move.

Early Act 1: prioritize bleed application and one reliable finisher. Invest attributes that boost physical damage and movement.

Mid Act 1: pick a branch. Revolutionary suits story rush; Blacksmith suits players who craft gear at the Citadel.

Late Act 1: equip passives that amplify bleed uptime and pair with hero tier rankings notes on boss encounters.

See build guides for sample attribute spreads and equipment priorities.

When to bench Soren

Soren stays in most story squads because of narrative missions, but for pure trap or zone-control puzzles you might favor Tizon, Gala, and Sade without him. Ranged-heavy enemy maps can also stress his melee range — bring Maya or Rayder for reach.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Is Soren mandatory in every squad?

Story missions often feature Soren, but optional encounters let you field any five heroes. He is strongest when you can flank and maintain bleed.

Which branch is better for beginners?

Revolutionary branch is easier to feel impact quickly thanks to burst bleed combos. Blacksmith branch scales better if you craft weapons at your settlement.

Does bleed stack with Maya's blind?

Yes. Blind reduces enemy accuracy while bleed and Soren's passives increase damage — a common Act 1 synergy noted in preview coverage.

How does Soren compare on the tier list?

Soren sits in the reliable DPS tier for Act 1 — not as explosive as a damage-built Tizon, but consistent and always available for story content. Check [hero rankings](/tier-list/hero-rankings/) for encounter-specific notes.
